FAQ

  • What is a good age to start music lessons?

Typically between the ages of 5 and 9, children have developed the necessary physical and mental skills to succeed at music lessons from an adult. However studies show that music learning occurs from birth onwards, so if your child isn’t ready for traditional piano lessons, there are things that help prime them for music learning later on. Sing with your child, dance to music, and give them freedom to explore musical toys or instruments.

  • Do I need to own a piano to start lessons?

Yes! A quality, acoustic piano is ideal for study. If an acoustic piano is absolutely not possible, a full size (88 keys) with touch-sensitive, weighted keys may suffice for a time.

  • Can adults take music lessons?

Yes you can! Whether you are just starting out or took lessons as a child and want to revive your playing skills, you can play and learn new things at any age. You are worth it!

  • How much should my child practice?

Practice time varies by age and level. For my youngest students, it is critical that parents are involved in setting practice expectations for their child. The weekly assignments should be viewed as "homework." Completion of homework and thorough preparation of assignments for each lesson is expected.

The discipline of daily practice leads to progress which fuels motivation to continue to practice and progress. The more you practice, the more fun it is to play and learn an instrument! Parents are expected to be actively involved in practicing with beginners and young children until they reach an age where they can be more self-directed in their practicing.

  • Should I be involved in my child's lessons?

Parental support is an extremely important factor in musical training. Children whose parents take an active and honest interest in their child's progress tend to be more enthusiastic and productive. Detailed lesson notes are provided at the end of each lesson. Please contact me if there are still questions in regards to what your child should practice.

  • Do you offer make-up lessons?

Regular attendance of lessons is an issue of responsibility and choice on the part of parents and students. Lessons are conducted each week on a specific day and time, which is reserved for each student during the month. I will offer 2 make up lessons a semester for absences that can’t be avoided due to illness or emergency. Please notify me in advance (72 hours) if you plan to miss your lesson that week.
